There’s all sorts of stuff visible just outside Portsmouth harbour, but what’s that thing in the middle?
Not a hovercraft.
It is in fact a fort, built in the 19th century, to protect Portsmouth Dockyard from invasion. There are three others out in the Solent there as well. They are armour-plated and were kept armed with the latest weapons through to 1956.
But the invasion never came and, no longer needed, they were sold in the 1980s. No Man’s Fort and Spitbank Fort were transformed into luxury hotels. These, along with Horse Sand Fort, were offered up for sale again at the end of 2019. Certainly a unique opportunity!
